Spin-to-Win & Scratch-Off Popups for List Growth

A plain "join our newsletter" popup converts at 1–2%. A Spin-to-Win wheel or Scratch-Off card gives visitors an active reason to submit — they're playing for a discount, not filling in a form. MailInApp makes this a native feature of popup signup forms, configured in the same form builder, embedded in the same vanilla-JS snippet, with codes stored alongside each subscriber in your contacts list.

A Spin-to-Win wheel or Scratch-Off card embedded on your own website, configured in the signup form builder — no external plugin, no separate app. A visitor spins or scratches, gets a discount code, and signs up. The code lands in their confirmation message and in your contacts list, tied directly to that subscriber.

Gamified lead magnets routinely outperform plain "join our list" popups on conversion rate. The game mechanic creates a micro-moment of excitement that gives a visitor an active reason to submit their email rather than dismissing the overlay. MailInApp makes this a native feature of popup signup forms — no third-party plugin required, no separate code to embed.

How it works

From the Signup Forms tab, create or edit a popup form and open the Gamified Lead Magnet section. Toggle to Spin-to-Win or Scratch-Off, then configure your slices or prize:

Spin-to-Win wheel

Add wheel slices — each with a display label (e.g. "15% off"), a promo code, and a win ratio. Win ratios are relative weights (e.g. 3 slices weighted 40/40/20 give the third slice a 20% chance). The code for whatever slice the wheel lands on is appended to the submission payload and shown in the post-submit confirmation message.

Scratch-Off card

Configure a single prize label and promo code. A visitor sees a scratch overlay; once they fill in their email and submit, the overlay lifts to reveal the code.

What the embed script does

The embed script (/f/[formId]/embed.js) is pure vanilla JavaScript — no React, no external runtime required on your customer's site. It renders the wheel using HTML5 Canvas or the scratch card using a CSS/pointer-event overlay, inlined in the popup. Because it's self-contained, it works on any site without touching its own JavaScript framework.

The promo code is appended to the form submission payload and stored alongside the subscriber's contact row, so you can filter your contacts list by awarded code later or use it as a merge tag in a welcome email.

Does it work for inline and hosted forms too?

Gamification is only available on popup forms — the overlay-first user experience is a natural fit for the full-page popup mechanic. Inline and hosted forms stay as plain fields.

Getting started

  1. Go to Signup Forms and create or edit a Popup form.
  2. Open the Gamified Lead Magnet section and pick Spin-to-Win or Scratch-Off.
  3. Add your slices / prize, promo code(s), and win ratios.
  4. Hit Save and grab the updated embed snippet from Get code.

See Signup forms & popups for the full embed and configuration reference.

A typical build-and-send sequence

  1. 1

    Create a popup signup form

From the Signup Forms tab, pick Popup, point it at a contacts list, and set the trigger (delay, scroll, or exit intent).

  2. 2

    Add a gamified lead magnet

Open the Gamified Lead Magnet section and pick Spin-to-Win or Scratch-Off — add slices with labels, codes, and win ratios for a wheel, or a single prize code for the scratch card.

  3. 3

    Publish it

Get code gives you an updated embed snippet — drop it on your site. The popup renders the wheel or scratch card before the email field.

  4. 4

Use the code in your welcome email

The awarded code is stored on the subscriber's contact row and shows in their confirmation message — use it as a merge tag in a welcome email or a double-opt-in confirm project.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Spin-to-Win wheel need a third-party plugin?

No — the embed snippet already includes the canvas rendering logic for the wheel and the scratch-card overlay. Drop one snippet on your site; no extra libraries, no npm install.

Can I weight the wheel so a rare prize is genuinely rarer?

Yes — each slice has a win ratio field. Ratios are relative weights, so a wheel with slices at 40/40/20 gives the third slice a 20% effective chance. Any ratio above 0 can win.

Where does the promo code go after the visitor submits?

It's appended to the submission payload, stored on the contact row, and shown in the post-submit confirmation message. Use it as a {{promo_code}} merge tag in any follow-up welcome email.

Does gamification work on inline and hosted forms too?

Gamification is only available on popup forms — the overlay-first interaction is a natural fit for the full-page popup mechanic. Inline and hosted forms stay as plain fields.
